Growth invites The Resistance.

The Resistance calls for perseverance.

The Resistance can be personal, like the devil or the world.

It can be universal; life just has a way of pushing back.

It can be theological; God may want to sharpen our faith and character.

Wherever it comes from, failure gives The Resistance the final word.

That’s why “press on” is in the Bible.

Something (or someone) is pressing back… it may well be in our own hearts.

Do the next right thing – even if the next step is a repeat of steps taken before.

Stop whining.

Keep walking.

Andy, I love this post. Opposition, Resistance and Perseverance keep one on track. St Paul wrote to the church in Philippi saying “I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” (Philippians 3:14). Today people are being tempted to drop out of the race St Paul is talking about. Simon tempted Jesus to drop out with his worldly philosophy that life should be fun. And so it should. But Simon needed to commit himself to the plan that God had in mind for Simon. Simon like many people today was not so sure God was calling him to give up his freedom to come and go fishing and wandering the countryside as he pleased. To commit oneself to another person who has a demanding job and wants you to take care of their little lambs is a big commitment (John 21: 17-18) It takes opposition, resistance and perseverance!
