A Leader Who Can Raise the Flags Again

Row American Flags Half Mast Washington DC USA

Here we go again.

Another day.

Another crisis.

Another call for leadership.

Another round of half-mast flags…

Another set of news-bite wags…

A fresh supply of new #hashtags…

And another call for leadership.

More outrage at this

More outrage at your outrage at that,

Another mad rush of the gun shop owners to the bank…

And another call for leadership.

What do we mourn when we bemoan the lack of leadership?

Do we really know what are we calling for?

Here’s a place to start.  If we’re being honest and not just posturing, we’re calling (and perhaps praying) for…

  • A visionary who is anchored to a purpose and a cause that lifts everybody, not just the “victims” or the “powerful…”
  • A passionate pursuer of the good and noble, who will take all of us along for the ride…
  • A sense-maker – a clear communicator who can be eloquent in places other than funerals…
  • A culture creator, not just a trend follower, who sets an example for others to follow…
  • A decision maker who may not always choose the path we would take, but will choose a path that is in our best interest…
  • A servant, both of the greater good and of the smaller individuals who can’t stand up for themselves, with the wisdom to balance the two…
  • An advocate who walks with all of us, fights for all of us, and is available to all of us…
  • And an overcomer who believes there is evil in the world because they have seen it in their own mirror – and fought against it and prevailed.

Those are the marks of a leader who can raise the flags again. Your comments are welcome.

Worn
-Tenth Avenue North

I’m tired
I’m worn
My heart is heavy
From the work it takes to keep on breathing

I’ve made mistakes
I’ve let my hope fail
My soul feels crushed
By the weight of this world
And I know that you can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left

Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn

I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
‘Cause I’m worn

I know I need
To lift my eyes up
But I’m too weak
Life just won’t let up
And I know that You can give me rest
So I cry out with all that I have left

Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn

I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
Cause I’m worn

And my prayers are wearing thin
I’m worn even before the day begins
I’m worn I’ve lost my will to fight
I’m worn so heaven so come and flood my eyes

Let me see redemption win
Let me know the struggle ends
That you can mend a heart that’s frail and torn

I want to know a song can rise
From the ashes of a broken life
And all that’s dead inside can be reborn
Yes all that’s dead inside will be reborn
Though I’m worn
Yeah I’m worn

So weary of seeing our mighty and noble flag ever at half-mast . . . Yes, we need positive leadership that is selfless – a servant leader.
Blessings, Andy!
