Who Was Really Wearing That Blindfold?

The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” And they said many other insulting things to him (Luke 22:63-65, NIV).

Making fun.

Something we all do, to ourselves or to somebody else.  Sometimes good-natured, sometimes amazingly insensitive.

But here it’s different.  Here the “fun” is at the expense of the Son of God, and particularly His very nature.  Verse 65 says they were blaspheming.

There is only one reason these men were able to do this – Jesus submitted to it.

Only one reason He didn’t actually tell those brutes who had hit him – His love said no.

The cross was for them, too.  And the love of Jesus stands in stark contrast to the vile pride and hatred of men who sought to make a mockery of who Jesus was and what He had demonstrated himself to be.

Sometimes God reveals his character more when he refuses to respond to our demands.

Or our requests.

Or our foolish dare.

One Man wore a blindfold that day.  The others were just blind.  Glad that’s never true of me.

I need to worship Him, not mock Him.

I need to recognize that He truly knows no blindfold. He knows everything I say or do, and His silence is no evidence either of  ignorance or carelessness.

He knows.

He cares.

And He’s worthy of more from me.

“But I would never do that to Jesus,” you say.  “I would never knowingly mock or blaspheme Him.”

Neither would I.  But I’ve sure spent a lot of my life living as if He’s wearing that blindfold.

How about you?
