Every Leaning Side

Pisa(Cool things I’ve heard somebody pray, #1…)

Joyce is an editor for New Hope publishing. I’m working with her on a book project, and last week we got together by phone to talk about it.

Joyce is also a prayer warrior. And before we did anything of a business nature, she wanted to pray. “You go first,” she said. So I committed our time and the project to the Lord, asked for His direction on our conversation, etc. – the kinds of predictable things anyone would ask the Lord’s blessing on.

Then Joyce prayed.

And I went back to school.

She worshipped the Lord for His great love. Then she prayed for the project. And she prayed for me. And she said something to the Lord that captured my attention and my heart.

“Build him up on every leaning side,” she said.

That resonated with me, ‘cause I’ve felt a bit bent lately. I’ve been leaning.

Sometimes I find myself leaning forward. Straining. Pushing. Pressing. Huffing and puffing, as if my burden were mine to carry. “Build him up on every leaning side.” Translation: Let him know that it isn’t his burden to carry.

Sometimes I find myself leaning backwards. Thoughtful. Pensive. Relaxed to the point of lethargy. Brain dead at best; paralyzed at worst. “Build him up on every leaning side.” Translation: Renew his mind as he waits on you. Let him mount up with wings like eagles again.

Sometimes I find myself leaning to one side or the other. Out of balance. Distracted. Blindsided by circumstances, or stressed out in relationships. “Build him up on every leaning side.” Translation: Bear him up. Give your angels charge over him. Sustain him. Balance him. Straighten him.

You leaning lately? I thought it might be a good thing to remind you of a Father God who created you to need Him, a Son who gave His all to be the Bearer of your burdens, and a Spirit, who indwells believers and steers, sustains, and straightens them.

And my prayer for you is Joyce’s: God, build YOU up on every leaning side.
